International Standards for Chinese Proficiency in Chinese Language Education

Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education (GF0025-2021) were recently issued by the Ministry of Education and the State Language Commission, and will be formally implemented on July 1, 2021. Q: Why are the Standards for Chinese Proficiency in International Chinese Language Education issued?

A: Language is the best key to understand a country and culture, and standards are the key to master a language and teach it well. At present, 75 countries have incorporated Chinese into their national education systems, more than 4,000 foreign universities offer Chinese courses, 25 million people have studied Chinese, and 40 million various Chinese examinations have been taken . With increasing learning requirements, the principal contradiction of the international Chinese education has developed from "have to" to "ok", the learners, educators are keen to develop and introduce a set of scientific and standardized, inclusive open, easy to implement the standard, in Chinese learning, teaching, testing and evaluation of each link for guidance.

Chinese Proficiency Grades for International Chinese Language Education was approved by the Language Standards and Standards Review Committee of the State Language Commission in September 2020. It is the first standard for foreign Chinese learners to comprehensively describe and evaluate their Chinese language skills and levels. The issuance of "Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education" will further improve the standard system of language standards and provide strong support for the development of international Chinese language education.

The Standards for Chinese Proficiency of International Chinese Language Education (ISCE) divides learners' Chinese proficiency from low to high into three levels, namely, elementary, intermediate and advanced. In each level, there are three levels according to different levels, a total of "three levels and nine levels". The Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education are applicable to the study, teaching, testing and evaluation of international Chinese language education, and provide normative reference for it.
