At the end of the nineteenth century, Jiawu was defeated and the nation was in danger. A famous industrialist and educator in modern China, Sheng Xuanhuai founded Nanyang Public School —— the predecessor of Jiaotong University in Shanghai in 1896. During the War of Resistance against Japan, the vast number of teachers and students went through hardships, transferred to the concession, moved to Chongqing, insisted on running a school, many students committed to the army, bloody battlefield. On the eve of liberation, teachers and students actively engaged in the democratic revolution, the school is known as the "fortress of democracy ".

 

In the early days of the founding of New China, in order to meet the needs of national economic construction and construct the higher education system of New China, the schools adjusted a considerable number of superior specialties and teacher equipment to support the development of domestic fraternal colleges and universities. In the mid-1950s, the school responded to the call of the national construction of the northwest, experienced the westward relocation and division, divided into the Shanghai part of Jiaotong University and the Xi'an part.

 

In March 1959, the two parts were listed as the national key universities at the same time, the State Council approved the independent establishment, and the Shanghai part of Jiaotong University opened the name of Shanghai Jiaotong University. In the 1960s and 1970s, the school was led by the National Defense Science and Technology Commission and the sixth Ministry of Machinery and Industry, actively engaged in national defense personnel training and national defense scientific research, and made great contributions to "two bombs and one star" and national defense modernization.

Since the reform and opening up, the school has been determined to promote reform in the spirit of "dare to be the first in the world ": to form a delegation of professors to visit the United States, to implement the reform of the school management system, to accept donations from overseas friends, and so on.

 

With the strong support of the state and Shanghai, the school has resumed and built science, management, life, law and humanities, with the goal of "top level and first class" and discipline construction as the leading. In 1999, Shanghai Agricultural College merged; in 2005, it merged with Shanghai Second Medical University.



At this point, the school completed the comprehensive university discipline layout. In the past 20 years, through the construction of the national "211 project "and "985 project" and "double first-class" project, the high-level talents of the school are gathering day by day, and the scientific research strength has been rapidly improved, which has realized the transformation to the research university.
